CTA Guidelines for Professional Archeological Work
( 11 items )
CTA is a leader in the archaeological community in setting standards and establishing guidelines for the practice of successful and ethical archeology in Texas. CTA promotes high professional standards for archeology (see our pages on Survey Standards). Our guidelines serve as a benchmark for archeologists who wish to maintain CTA membership (their membership may be revoked if CTA discovers they do not adhere to our ethical standards).
The CTA guidelines provide a code of self-regulation concerning performance, curation, and reports.
The Guidelines are an evolving set of documents. Suggestions for revisions may be made to CTA's Editing and Review Committee. Follow the links below to read the CTA Guidelines and Survey Standards.

CTA's Guide to Archeological Contractors Operating in the Texas Region
( 2 items )
The CTA Contractors List provides a quick guide to archaeological contractors working in Texas. We've got complete contact information, full contractor descriptions, and if they have a web site or e-mail address - you're just a click of the mouse away. The contractors list is composed of individuals, firms, and institutions who are members in good standing with the Council of Texas Archeologists and who contract to conduct cultural resource investigations within the state of Texas. Hard copies of this list are distributed by the Texas Historical Commission, P. O. Box 12276, Austin, Texas 78711, as a public service to the CTA, archeological contractors, and project sponsors. Not all CTA members may qualify to undertake archeological investigations as required under state or federal statutes. There may also be individuals or organizations who are qualified to provide professional archeological services and who are not members of the CTA. When contracting with an archeologist, it is recommended that more than one estimate be obtained; project cost may vary considerably between organizations. Equal consideration should be given to all individuals or organizations, irrespective of their membership in the Council. Listing in this directory is voluntary and is not inclusive of all archeologists in Texas who are available for contracting. The entities listed have paid a fee to be placed on the CTA Contractors List. Inclusion in this directory does not guarantee the standards of quality of services performed by a contractor, nor that contract work will be executed in compliance with federal or state guidelines.

The purpose of ARC is to improve and bring up to current standards the care and management of archeological collections by administering an accreditation program for museums and repositories in the State of Texas. The ARC is empowered by CTA to set, review, and revise standards used in the accreditation process; accredit institutions; adjudicate accreditation appeals; establish and conduct field reviewer workshops; and establish, review, and revise policies and procedures. The ARC and its program are a service to, and a resource and educational outlet for, the professions that care for and preserve the archeological collections of Texas.
